Abstract:

Introduction: Radioactive materials deliver internal radiation dose to patients in nuclear medicine. Manual internal radiation dose assessment is a complicated method. Introduction of a simple dose calculation software is the main goal of the present study. Methods: Using the best current data in internal dose calculation (S-Factors) recommended by ICRP and by considering other technical methods in Medical Internal Radiation Dosimetry (MIRD), a software was designed using Visual Basic language to calculate the total body, Gonadal as well as the fetal dose in case of pregnancy. Results:  The software is PC based and operates under windows 98, Me and XP operating systems. Patient information such as name, age and injected activity (mCi) should be entered into the system. The current software considers Tc-99m for the calculations at present time, but it is also possible to consider other radiopharmaceuticals in the software in future. After defining the source organ, the total body effective dose as well as gonadal and fetus doses can be calculated in a printable manner. Conclusion: This user friendly software can easily and accurately calculate the internal dose. In contrast to available commercial softwares, it can be upgraded by local experts, but MIRD method limitation should also be considered.

Estimation and calculation of radiation dose of copper-64 for nuclear medicine usage

Radioactive materials used in nuclear medicine are the radioisotopes or drugs that are identified with radioisotopes. A radiopharmaceutical transfusion is one of diagnostic methods and a radiation value approved should be measured. The nuclear medicine images of diagnostic methods can be made by a gamma camera (γ-camera). In this article, we used MCNPX2.4 for internal dosimetry assessment when ...

Radiation dose to the nuclear medicine nurses

Background: People who have been administrated radiopharmaceuticals could be a source of radiation to their relatives, medical nurses, and people who are in contact with them. The aim of this work was to estimate radiation dose received by nuclear medicine nurses. Materials and Methods: In this study, the dose rates at various distances of 5 – 100 cm from 70 patients, who were administered diag...

Assessment of radiation dose in nuclear medicine hot lab

Background: Hot lab is a specially designed room in a nuclear medicine hospital where the radiopharmaceuticals are delivered, stored and prepared for dispensing. 99Mo/99mTc-generator is the major source in the hot lab used for various medical imaging. It is important to maintain a standard for hot lab procedures to optimize the patient care and minimize radiation exposure to all nuclear medicin...

New techniques in nuclear medicine for tumor detection [Persian]

Widespread studies on tumor diagnosis has led to the development of techniques with greater sensitivity and improved specificity for detection of occult and small subclinical tumors. Tumor imaging by radiolabeling of tumor-specific antibodies (Immunoscintigraphy) or tissue specific biochemical agents (Receptor imaging) and especially physiologic imaging with positron emitters (PET), have ...
